Your I-94: how to get it, read it and fix it

Form I-94 is the DHS arrival/departure record for travelers admitted to the United States. You get your own I-94 from the official CBP website, i94.cbp.dhs.gov. This page summarizes what official sources say about getting, reading and correcting it. EADly does not connect to CBP and is not affiliated with it.

What an I-94 is and who issues it

  • CBP describes Form I-94 as the DHS arrival/departure record issued electronically to travelers who are admitted to the United States, are adjusting status or are extending status. CBP Information Center

Visa and I-94 are different. ICE's SEVP page says a student can stay in the United States on an expired F-1 visa as long as they maintain student status. ICE SEVP An older SEVP post says the visa expiration date does not determine how long a student may stay. How to get your most recent I-94 and travel history

The I-94 website has four main parts: Apply for a Provisional I-94, Get Most Recent I-94/I-95, View Travel History and View Compliance. I-94 FAQ

  1. Go to the official site. Open i94.cbp.dhs.gov and choose "Get Most Recent I-94". CBP I-94 page
  2. Accept the terms. CBP's step-by-step instructions include reading and acknowledging the Terms of Service. I-94 FAQ
  3. Enter your details from the passport you used to enter. Enter your name, date of birth, document number and country of citizenship exactly as they appear on that travel document. Use the passport number linked to the I-94, even if that passport has expired. I-94 FAQ
  4. Match the passport exactly. Enter names as shown in the passport's machine-readable zone, without special characters such as tildes, accents or umlauts. If the passport lists more than one first or last name, enter all of them. If you entered with an A-Number, put it in the document number field. I-94 FAQ
  5. Consider Capture Document. CBP strongly suggests this feature, which fills in the data from a camera image or an uploaded image of your passport's biographic page. I-94 FAQ
  6. Print. A print button appears after retrieval, and there is no limit on copies. I-94 FAQ SEVP and the Form I-102 instructions both say getting it online is free. Study in the States I-102 instructions
  • The website shows only the most recently created I-94 that matches the name and date of birth entered. Earlier records cannot be retrieved. I-94 FAQ Lookups go back to 1983 for most classes of admission. I-94 website
  • Travelers admitted for duration of status (D/S) can get their I-94 regardless of when it was created, as long as an electronic record exists. I-94 FAQ
  • The I-94 website calls the printout your lawful record of admission. I-94 website CBP says it is the document to present if asked for proof of admission, and that paper and printed versions are both acceptable for Form I-9. I-94 FAQ

Travel history

  • "View Travel History" shows U.S. arrivals and departures for the past 10 years, including travel on an expired passport. I-94 website I-94 FAQ Older SEVP posts from 2014, marked as possibly outdated, say five years. Study in the States (2014) Study in the States (2014)
  • CBP says the travel history is a helpful tool and not an official record for legal purposes. I-94 FAQ
  • It may leave out most land-border arrivals and departures, closed-loop cruises, air carrier reservation updates and I-94s issued by USCIS for changes of status, extensions of stay or adjustments of status. I-94 FAQ
  • To correct travel history, CBP lists two routes, a CBP Information Center redress or DHS TRIP. It says to pick only one and include supporting evidence. I-94 FAQ

If your I-94 cannot be found

Official pages give different routes, and they are listed here without choosing one.

  • CBP's I-94 FAQ says to file a redress request with the CBP Information Center ("Ask Us a Question", topic "I-94/Traveler Compliance", issue "Issue with my I-94/Travel History") with a legible copy of your current passport. A third party other than a parent of a minor must attach written consent, and CBP recommends Form G-28. I-94 FAQ

Air, sea and land arrivals

  • CBP says it gathers arrival and departure information automatically from electronic travel records, and visitors no longer fill out a paper I-94. CBP I-94 page
  • Travelers arriving by air or sea cannot apply for an I-94 on the I-94 website. I-94 FAQ
  • Air and sea fee: sources differ. CBP's I-94 FAQ says the I-94 fee is built into the airline or sea ticket. I-94 FAQ CBP's Federal Register notice says CBP will not charge an I-94 fee to people arriving at an air or sea port of entry. 90 FR 52085

Paper I-94

  • CBP says land-border travelers now get electronic I-94s and no longer get a paper stub. CBP I-94 page CBP Information Center SEVP tells students they will not receive a paper copy. Study in the States
  • If you want a paper I-94, CBP says you can print your own from the I-94 website or the CBP Link app. At the land border you can ask for a paper form during inspection, and CBP handles those requests in secondary inspection. CBP I-94 page
  • A 2021 CBP fact sheet says CBP intends to keep giving a paper I-94 to select classes of travelers, such as certain asylees and parolees. CBP fact sheet (2021)
  • Older pages differ. CBP's I-94 Automation Fact Sheet page still says the paper form is not provided except in limited circumstances and at land ports of entry. Land border: provisional I-94 and its fee

  • If you travel by land, or by ferry from selected ports, you can apply and pay for a provisional I-94 on the I-94 website or in the CBP Link app within seven days before entering. The only ferry port listed is CBP Victoria Preclearance. I-94 FAQ
  • The land-border I-94 fee is $30 for fiscal year 2026: a $6 land border fee plus a $24 HR-1 fee. 90 FR 52085 CBP says the $30 fee started September 30, 2025. I-94 FAQ 90 FR 42025
  • Payment goes through Pay.gov. CBP lists PayPal and MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover cards. I-94 FAQ CBP Information Center
  • You get a receipt, not a provisional form. You must appear at a port of entry within seven days of applying to get the final I-94. If you do not, the provisional I-94 expires and you must reapply and pay again. I-94 FAQ
  • The fee is non-refundable, non-transferable and non-exchangeable, including if entry is refused. A provisional I-94 does not guarantee admission. I-94 FAQ
  • If you present a different travel document than the one you applied with, or your data does not match, you must pay for a new I-94 at admission. I-94 FAQ
  • Canadian citizens who will seek employment or student status at the port of entry cannot apply for a provisional I-94 in advance. I-94 FAQ
  • A valid, unexpired I-94 under most classes may allow multiple entries by land or sea from Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands (not Cuba). Short trips of less than 30 days by land or ferry to those areas do not produce a new I-94 and do not extend the Admit Until Date. I-94 FAQ

What each field means

A July 2026 DHS rule that would give F students a specific Admit Until Date instead of D/S had its effective date postponed by a court on September 14, 2026, and USCIS says it "will proceed under the previous regulatory provisions." Federal Register USCIS I-765

  • CBP says a traveler still in the United States must leave by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the last day of admission shown by the Admit Until Date. I-94 FAQ
  • A CBP Information Center article says F status holders may stay up to 60 days after the end of their studies or OPT, and H status holders up to 10 days past the petition validity period or the end of employment. CBP Information Center
  • CBP's "View Compliance" tool, which counts days left on an admission, is currently only for Visa Waiver Program and Guam visa waiver travelers. I-94 FAQ

Correcting an error

Where you go depends on who issued the I-94.

CBP-issued I-94: Deferred Inspection

  • Deferred Inspection staff can fix entry errors involving the wrong nonimmigrant classification, inaccurate biographic information or an incorrect period of admission. They only correct errors made at entry. Extensions and changes of status are handled by USCIS. CBP Deferred Inspection
  • Any Deferred Inspection location, or any CBP office in an international airport, should be able to help, wherever the document was issued. CBP encourages contacting sites outside airports to make an appointment if needed. CBP Deferred Inspection
  • The Deferred Inspection page lists hours, phone numbers and I-94 correction instructions for each site. Detroit, for example, asks for an email describing the issue with photos or scans of the passport biographic page, visa page, most recent admission stamp and other relevant documents.   • If you were legally admitted but not given an I-94, a CBP article says to contact the nearest Deferred Inspection Site with proof of admission, such as a stamped passport copy and travel tickets. CBP Information Center
  • Sources differ on timing and method. The I-94 FAQ says within thirty days; the Deferred Inspection page states no deadline.   • For F-1 students, SEVP pages differ. A 2025 SEVP post says to contact a CBP Deferred Inspection Site if the I-94 shows the wrong visa type or expiration date. USCIS-issued I-94

  • A CBP article also says a person who received an incorrect I-94 from USCIS should refer to Form I-102 or visit the nearest USCIS site. CBP Information Center
  • The Form I-102 instructions say to attach the I-94 and a signed, dated statement naming what needs correcting, with evidence. I-102 instructions
  • When a USCIS document has an error that is not your fault, USCIS says you generally file a new form but do not pay a new fee. USCIS The 2026 USCIS fee rule lists "Replacement for USCIS error" at $0. 91 FR 22952

Lost or damaged I-94: Form I-102

  • Form I-102 is for nonimmigrants who need a new or replacement Form I-94 or I-95. It is filed with a USCIS lockbox. USCIS I-102
  • If you were admitted at an air or sea port with an electronic I-94, USCIS says to get a paper copy, including a replacement, from CBP's I-94 website. USCIS I-102
  • The instructions say who may file, including people not issued an I-94 at entry, people whose I-94 was lost, stolen or mutilated, and people granted an extension or change of status who need a replacement. You must have a U.S. address. I-102 instructions
  • Every filing needs a copy of government-issued ID showing your legal name and date of birth. For a lost or stolen I-94, add copies of the passport biographic page and the admission page, and a police report or explanation if it was stolen. For a mutilated I-94, attach the damaged original. I-102 instructions

Fee

  • The 2024 USCIS fee rule set $560 to replace a lost, mutilated or destroyed I-94. 89 FR 6194
  • Since May 29, 2026, Form I-102 filings are also subject to the $24 HR-1 Form I-94 fee. The rule's table lists a general filing at $560 plus $24, or $584 in total. 91 FR 22952
  • The HR-1 I-94 fee cannot be waived through the USCIS fee waiver process, and it is to be adjusted for inflation every year. 91 FR 22952
  • The USCIS I-102 page does not state the fee itself. It refers readers to the USCIS fee schedule. USCIS I-102 The figures above come from the Federal Register.

How departures are recorded

  • Air or sea: CBP records the departure electronically from carrier or CBP manifest information. CBP I-94 page CBP's FAQ says if you leave by air there is nothing you need to do. I-94 FAQ
  • Land or sea: the departure may not be recorded automatically, so CBP says to check "View Travel History". I-94 FAQ
  • With an electronic I-94, a land departure is recorded if you re-enter before the expiration date stamped in your passport. Non-residents of Canada or Mexico who do not re-enter in time may want to travel with evidence of their departure into Canada or Mexico, such as passport entry stamps, tickets, pay stubs or receipts. CBP I-94 page
  • A land or ferry departure into Canada is typically recorded by the CBSA officer. Land departures into Mexico are not recorded automatically, and you may need to speak with a CBP officer before entering Mexico. I-94 FAQ
  • A paper I-94 should be surrendered on departure to the carrier, CBSA or CBP. CBP I-94 page If you left still holding it, a CBP article says to mail it with proof of departure to Coleman Data Solutions, Box 7965, Akron, OH 44306, Attn: NIDPS (I-94). It says they do not reply, and not to send it to embassies, consulates or CBP offices. CBP Information Center
  • CBP lists common reasons a departure is missing, such as a different passport, a different name spelling, an airline misspelling or manifest omission, a land departure into Mexico or a cruise wrongly marked closed-loop. The CBP apps: CBP One, CBP Home and CBP Link

  • In March 2025 CBP announced the CBP Home app, which then included applying and paying for an I-94. CBP release, March 2025 In June 2025 CBP announced CBP Link, which took over those functions, and said CBP Home would be used only for self-deportation. CBP release, June 2025
  • CBP's apps directory lists CBP Link for provisional I-94 entry and CBP Home for notifying the government of intent to depart. It does not list CBP One. CBP apps directory CBP says CBP Link is free. CBP Link page
  • CBP's FAQ describes a CBP Link departure feature: after leaving, open "Departing Traveler" and then "Verify Departure", be at least 3 miles outside the border, turn on location, take a selfie and enter your data. CBP records the date you use the app as your departure date. I-94 FAQ
  • CBP says using the app is voluntary, and a departure can instead be registered through a CBP Information Center request or a DHS TRIP redress, with evidence. I-94 FAQ

Official pages differ on which app records departures. The I-94 FAQ's departure answer tells travelers to use the CBP Home app, then says the date you use the CBP Link app is the recorded date. I-94 FAQ A 2026 CBP article also points land and sea departures to CBP Home. CBP Information Center CBP's CBP Home page lists only "Intent to Depart". CBP Home page CBP's CBP Link page lists neither a departure feature nor "Get Most Recent I-94", although the FAQ describes both in CBP Link. I-94 and automatic visa revalidation

  • CBP says an electronic I-94 is kept in CBP systems and a CBP officer can verify it for automatic visa revalidation, if you are eligible. You may need to print it and show it to the airline or ship when boarding. I-94 FAQ
  • With a paper I-94, you must present the valid, unexpired paper I-94 and required travel documents. I-94 FAQ
  • A CBP article describes revalidation as covering trips of 30 days or less to Canada, Mexico or, for F and J, adjacent islands. It says you cannot apply for a new visa and use automatic revalidation at the same time. CBP Information Center
  • ICE says F-1 students can usually revalidate an expired visa this way with a valid Form I-20 and a valid, unexpired I-94. ICE SEVP
  • CBP says travelers who go outside those areas, stay longer than 30 days or surrender their I-94 must get and pay for a new I-94 on re-entry. I-94 FAQ

How do I get my I-94?

Go to the official CBP I-94 website, i94.cbp.dhs.gov, choose "Get Most Recent I-94", accept the terms and enter your name, date of birth, passport number and country of citizenship exactly as shown on the passport you used to enter. You can also use the free CBP Link app. EADly does not connect to CBP.

Is getting my I-94 free?

Yes, looking up and printing your I-94 online is free, according to SEVP and the Form I-102 instructions. A provisional I-94 for a land-border entry costs $30 for fiscal year 2026, and Form I-102 has its own fee.

What does D/S mean on my I-94?

D/S means Duration of Status. CBP's I-94 Expiration Dates fact sheet says that for students and exchange visitors the Admit Until Date is D/S, and for other classifications it is a hard end date. See the fields section above for a note on a postponed 2026 rule.

How do I correct an error on my I-94?

For an I-94 issued by CBP at entry, CBP's FAQ says to contact the nearest Deferred Inspection office within thirty days of admission, or use the CBP Ask a Question portal; the Deferred Inspection page itself states no deadline. For an I-94 issued by USCIS, contact USCIS, which says to file Form I-102.

What is Form I-102 and how much does it cost?

Do I get a paper I-94 at a land border?

Current CBP pages say land-border travelers now get electronic I-94s with no paper stub. You can print your own from the I-94 website, or request a paper form during inspection, which CBP handles in secondary inspection. Some older official pages still describe paper I-94s at land ports.

How is my departure recorded?

CBP records air and sea departures electronically from manifest information. Land and sea departures may not be recorded automatically, so CBP suggests checking your travel history. CBP's FAQ also describes a voluntary departure feature in the CBP Link app, though official pages differ on which CBP app records departures.

How far back does I-94 travel history go?

Current CBP pages say View Travel History covers the past 10 years. CBP says it is a helpful tool and not an official record for legal purposes, and it may leave out most land-border travel.
